The voice behind bestselling book It Ends with Us has shared a deeply personal story of her own. Author Colleen Hoover, announced on January 12, 2026 that she had been undergoing cancer treatment.

In an Instagram story, the 46-year-old posted a photo of herself in a hospital gown, on her 2nd last day of radiation, expressing her gratitude for her treatment team at Texas Oncology.

Hoover has not disclosed the type of cancer she was diagnosed with.

Colleen Hoover’s cancer diagnosis

Hoover first revealed her cancer diagnosis through a private Facebook fanpage last December. She had delayed addressing her health issues until filming Reminders of Him was finished. She later received her diagnosis on her return home. According to her post, her cancer was removed through surgery, followed by treatment with radiation therapy. She did not require chemotherapy.

Because of the cancer diagnosis, Hoover missed the premiere of Regretting You in October last year, a movie based on her 2019 novel.

In January 2026, the author shared her genetic testing results, joking:

“I got results back today from the geneticist that say my cancer did not come from family genes. It also didn’t come from the two main causes of the cancer, which are HPV and excessive hormones.

This means it was more than likely environmental/lifestyle, which is lack of exercise, poor diet and stress.

I’m happy and grateful to be alive but I hate vegetables. I hate when I have to get off the couch. I hate sweating.

I hate when science is right.

If you see me at the gym, don’t even tell me good job. If you see me at a restaurant eating grilled chicken and drinking water, I’m probably real mad about it.”

Hoover’s health updates were met with overwhelming support and well wishes.

What is Hoover known for?

The talented and award-winning author started self-publishing with her debut novel Slammed in 2012. The book received a glowing review and quickly rose to the New York Times bestseller list. Hoover later signed with a traditional publisher and has since sold over 20 million books.

Her success was not a one-time event, as her subsequent novels also hit the charts. For years, Hoover’s popularity grew quietly through dedicated reader circles, but it was the surge through the BookTok community that made her a literary sensation.

Hoover’s most popular book It Ends with Us has been made into a movie, which was released in August 2024. Building on the film’s success, adaptations of Reminders of Him, Verity, and Regretting You are currently underway.

Unfortunately, the stars behind the movie It Ends with Us have been embroiled in a legal battle between actor-director Justin Baldoni and co-star Blake Lively, beginning with a complaint filed by Lively in December 2024.

Hoover’s latest work

Hoover’s latest book Woman Down has just been released on 13 January 2026. Because she recently shared her diagnosis, Hoover has clarified through an Instagram story that she has been “open about it for a while” and that her health updates were not “a ploy to get sympathy-sales for release day”.
