Marcel’s cancer journey
Marcel Johnson was a Tiktok creator whose account boasts almost a million followers. His videos reflected his everyday experiences throughout his cancer journey. As his devastated wife reflected in the announcement of his passing, “I know he would want me to make this video. He took you guys on the whole entire journey, the worst days and the best days.”
Marcel was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric adenocarcinoma in August 2025. He had visited the hospital after experiencing stomach pains, and was diagnosed four days later with terminal colorectal cancer. By then, the tumors had already spread to his liver.

Marcel's first post about his cancer diagnosis
Marcel began documenting his experiences on Tiktok for his family and his children “because [he knew] things [were] gonna change”. Throughout his fourteen-month long battle with cancer, he shared the emotional ups and downs of his cancer journey. Marcel talked about his symptoms through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and updated his audience on his treatment plans. He also engaged with followers who gave unsolicited therapeutic advice, and opened up about navigating family life through the diagnosis.

I just smile everytime he looks at me so he thinks everything is ok, but it’s exhausting. #cancersucks #gicancerawareness #fyp #cancerawareness #xyzbca ♬ Novocaine 2 - Cloke & Shiloh Dynasty

Marcel’s final months
In September 2026, after over 20 rounds of chemotherapy, Marcel’s medical team started broaching the idea of hospice care. In mid-October, Marcel flew to the City of Hope Treatment Center in California for his final appointment with oncologists. After the session, he posted a video where he explains that he “just got some of the worst news of [his] life”. His oncologists told him that his body wasn’t strong enough to handle chemotherapy or radioactive therapy, and he wasn’t qualified for any medical trials.
In his final months, Marcel’s care team shifted from curing his disease to alleviating its symptoms. As Marcel said in another post, “I’ve got to choose peace this time. I may not get back up from another treatment.” A few days before his passing, Taylor posted a video announcing that Marcel was moved to hospice care, a type of care usually reserved for end-of-life support, focused on comforting and alleviating the worst of a patient's symptoms.
Marcel passed in his family home, alone with his wife Taylor, in accordance with his final wishes.
Marcel’s legacy
Marcel Johnson may have been known for his cancer journey on Tiktok, but he also made his mark as a father trying to support his family during tough times. He monetized the platform for additional aid, asking his fanbase for their support through whatever engagement and donations they could spare. Marcel’s GoFundMe campaign, which used to cover his medical bills after he lost his health insurance in July, is now repurposed to raise money for Taylor and the Johnson kids.

Marcel's post on how he wants to be remembered
Marcel’s family is heavily featured on his feed, and is also reflected in the cheesecake store he owns with Taylor, Lil Daddy’s Cheesecakes. This family-owned business was featured on Fox Local Detroit four months into Marcel’s cancer diagnosis. When asked what went through his mind after hearing his 12-month prognosis, Marcel pointed to his wife Taylor, on-air with him, and his kids. “Anything I can do in those 12 months to make sure they’re taken care of.” On their store’s logo, Marcel and Taylor’s youngest son smiles brightly at would-be customers.

Marcel shows off his youngest son's hair
In one of Marcel’s final videos, the proud father smiles and turns the camera to the same little boy. “Show everybody your hair.” As his son puts his head down and turns around to show off his braids, he asks Marcel, “Who are you showing?” Marcel’s eyes shine bright as he answers. “The world.”
His son asks again, as his father lets out multiple wows. “Why are you showing the world?” “Because they see videos of you all the time. Did you know that?”
The boy turns around again and tells his father, “Show them the back!” “Wow! You look so good.” As the video ends, Marcel turns the camera to his grinning son, and tells him to say goodbye. The boy says, “Bye world!” as the video ends with a final frame of the smiling father and son. Even as Marcel has passed on, the world, and his family, will always remember him.
