In 2021, I sought medical help for the breathing difficulties I was facing. This eventually led to my diagnosis of stage 1 lung cancer. After seeking a second opinion from a more experienced doctor and finding out more treatment options, I proceeded with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and pain medication. I’m currently undergoing treatment at the hospital for chemoradiation.
My experience with cancer started when I noticed that I was having difficulty breathing. This prompted me to seek medical attention, where I was given the life-changing diagnosis of stage 1 lung cancer. I subsequently sought a second opinion to consult a more experienced doctor at the same hospital.
Hearing the news that I indeed have lung cancer overwhelmed me with sadness. I couldn’t shake off the feelings of disappointment, grief and emptiness that plagued me. I just felt utterly powerless, remorseful and vulnerable, thinking back on how I’ve lost a friend to cancer too.
I made it a point to abstain from alcohol completely. I also exercised more frequently and cut back on smoking.
My doctor recommended chemo, radiation, and pain medication as part of my treatment plan. After seeking a second opinion to find out more treatment options, I decided to proceed with this plan. I’m currently receiving chemo and radiation therapy.
Unlike many, I was fortunate to not experience side effects as a result of treatment.
When treatment began, I knew permanent changes were needed. I committed to exercising more and managing my alcohol intake.
Cancer didn’t just have an impact on my lifestyle, but also on my personal relationships. Since finding out I have cancer, I have not been able to call or visit my parents as often. The same goes with my kids; we don’t spend as much time hanging out together or going on family trips after my cancer diagnosis. However, my sexual life with my partner has changed too in that we are more intimate with each other.
My greatest dream is to be free of cancer. I want to live a long life.
The fear of death has been my single greatest fear throughout my cancer journey. I’ve found solace in meditation to help me cope with this fear.
Some time has passed since I was first diagnosed with cancer, and the feeling I resonate with the most now is optimism. I feel confident, courageous and hopeful as I move forward.
To others navigating their own cancer journeys, I offer a simple message: have hope.
