I'm Sanjana, a breast cancer survivor.
Diagnosed with stage 1 cancer within the past 2 years, my treatment journey included chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal therapy. Today, I'm grateful for completing treatment and remain optimistic despite lingering fears about fertility and menopause.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer about two years ago. It all started with thickening or swelling of part of my breast. The sudden pain in my breast prompted me to seek medical attention, leading to the discovery of stage 1 breast cancer.
When I first received my diagnosis, I was angry and surprised. The news left me feeling numb and resentful, with a cloud of confusion hanging over me.
Following my diagnosis, I made several changes to my lifestyle. I increased my exercise frequency by 50%, determined to improve my physical health. Additionally, I made conscious efforts to adopt a healthier diet several days a week. One significant change was giving up alcohol entirely, whereas previously, I indulged in drinking twice a week. These adjustments were essential steps in preparing myself for the treatment journey ahead.
The same dedicated team of oncologists who diagnosed me continued to oversee my treatment. Their recommended treatment plan included
Despite the initial uncertainty, I felt hopeful and motivated as I embarked on this journey towards healing.
I experienced hair loss and weight fluctuations, which significantly impacted me. To manage these side effects, I relied on prescribed medication for relief and also resorted to self-medication.
The burden of cancer treatment extended beyond the physical and emotional realm; it also brought financial difficulties.
With insurance coverage falling short, I had to rely on the kindness of friends and family to help cover the bills. This added stress served as a reminder of the harsh realities of battling cancer.
After completing my cancer treatment, I continue to prioritize nutrition and exercise. I recognize their crucial roles in maintaining my health post-treatment.
Moreover, I cherish the time spent with my family, making it a point to text/call and visit regularly, just as I did before my diagnosis. Despite the challenges, I remain committed to living a fulfilling and healthy life.
Looking ahead, I am filled with gratitude for my family's unwavering support throughout my cancer journey. Their love and encouragement have inspired me to set ambitious goals for myself. I am determined to push my limits by participating in a charity fitness challenge this year, aiming to raise funds and make a positive impact in my community.
Additionally, my biggest dream is to build a care center for stray dogs. With determination and perseverance, I am eager to turn these aspirations into reality, one step at a time.
Throughout my journey to recovery, my biggest fear has been the uncertainty surrounding menopause. I worry about whether I will go through it naturally again if and when I stop my medications.
Despite my monthly check-ups and regular breast self-exams, the fear lingers in the back of my mind. However, I try to remain confident and calm, especially as I see improving results with each passing month.
Today, I feel optimistic and courageous as I reflect on my journey. While the fear still lingers, I have made strides in overcoming it, one step at a time.
I wanted to share my story because when I was diagnosed I never thought I would get back to full strength. It took me a while to enjoy life fully again.
I hope by sharing my story with other warriors it will help you realize it is possible to regain your life and be stronger, happier, and healthier in lots of ways.
