Hi, I'm Siew. I'm married with 2 kids. This is my cancer story.
Upon seeing my family general practitioner (GP) for bad stomach cramps, I was referred to a hospital for an endoscopy. Endoscopy results revealed a stage 2 gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in my stomach. This diagnosis took me by surprise, and I faced a wide range of emotions.
I've since completed treatment, after undergoing keyhole surgery as part of my treatment plan and taking Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The main symptom that prompted me to seek medical attention from my family's regular general practitioner (GP) was bad stomach cramps.
Subsequently, they referred me to a hospital for an endoscopy, the results of which revealed a stage 2 gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in my stomach.
Doctors then explained to me that my 5-year survival rate was 90%.
Being diagnosed with cancer was a surprise, and it brought me face-to-face with a wide range of emotions. I was fearful, frightened and worried but confused all at the same time.
After my cancer diagnosis, I made adjustments to my nutrition and diet by adopting a healthier diet that I stuck to every day.
Surgery Plan:
- Keyhole surgery
I proceeded with keyhole surgery as recommended by my doctor. Deciding on my treatment plan was an anxious time, but it gave me motivation as well.
Apart from conventional treatment methods, I took Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) too.
I was most affected by pain at the wound site after undergoing keyhole surgery. Managing this side effect required me to improve my nutrition. My doctors prescribed me medication to help with the pain too.
After undergoing treatment, I continued my healthier eating habits and started incorporating more regular exercise into my routine.
Going through cancer has had a profound impact on my relationships with my family, particularly my children. We now spend significantly more time together compared to before my diagnosis. Moreover, where family trips were rare occurrences in the past, we now go on two trips annually.
In addition to family outings, I've made plans to travel to Genting with some friends from church. I'm also looking forward to moving to my new house soon.
Being able to retire in good health, free from any worries or concerns is my biggest dream. I'd also love to dedicate more time to bonding with my grandchildren.
Even though I've been declared cancer-free for a few years now, my greatest fear remains the possibility of the cancer coming back and spreading to other parts of my body. To cope with this, I turn to prayer, finding solace in the belief that God will protect me. Additionally, I seek support from my friends at church, while my son and daughter provide me with constant reassurance.
A few years have gone by since the time I was first diagnosed with gastric cancer. My initial feelings of confusion, fear and worry have dissipated, leaving me feeling rather neutral now towards my condition.
This journey with cancer is undoubtedly challenging and often fraught with stress, anxiety, and worry. I know, as someone who's had cancer and who's lost their dear aunt to cancer. However, placing your trust in God can provide solace, knowing that He understands your struggles and wants what's best for you.
