Hi, my name is Aloysius, and this is my story as someone with colorectal cancer.
For treatment, I was recommended a partial colectomy and surgery. I’m currently on chemotherapy medication now.
I didn’t experience any symptoms. But, during a routine medical checkup, the doctor attending to me advised me to go for further tests. That’s when I knew something was wrong. Ultimately, I was diagnosed with stage 1 colorectal cancer.
Receiving the news of my diagnosis left me feeling fearful and surprised. I was overwhelmed and worried, as well as confused because I did not expect this.
In response to my diagnosis, I decided to focus on improving my nutrition and diet, opting for a healthier eating routine 3 to 5 days a week to support my overall health and well-being.
Following my diagnosis, I underwent a partial colectomy, which involved the removal of a part of my colon. Additionally, chemotherapy was recommended by my doctors as part of my treatment plan.
Trusting their expertise and after conducting my own research, I decided to proceed with their recommendations. As of the time I write this, I am receiving chemotherapy. I felt relieved, motivated and hopeful after finalizing my treatment plan.
Fortunately, I did not experience any significant side effects from the treatments or medications administered during my cancer journey.
Since embarking on my treatment journey, I've made some permanent changes to my lifestyle. One significant change is in my diet — I now aim to eat a healthier diet three to five days a week. Additionally, I've started exercising more frequently.
My biggest dream and aspiration is to advance in my career and be promoted to a senior manager at work. But for now, I'm just going out, having a good social life and living my life as normally as I can.
With my loved ones, I hope to see my younger siblings grow up, graduate from university, and secure good jobs. I'm also looking forward to my sister's wedding in 2025.
My biggest fear throughout my journey to recovery was getting so sick that I can't live like a "normal" person. In the face of this fear, I try my best to stay positive, not overthink and take life one day at a time.
Thinking about my feelings today, I’m rather optimistic and hopeful about the future.
My advice for those who are currently on their own cancer journey is to keep going and don't give up.
