Hi, I'm Tonya, a radiographer and mother of two. I’m from South Africa, but I’m currently living in Ireland and had my treatment done here. My journey with breast cancer began six years ago.

The diagnosis left me feeling frightened, helpless, and overwhelmed.

Initially, my doctor recommended lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) and I opted for it since it was covered by my insurance plan. However the surgery wasn't effective in controlling the cancer, I had to undergo mastectomy (complete removal of breast), radiation therapy and hormone therapy. Although I had a change in treatment plan, I remained relieved, hopeful and motivated throughout.
For now, I’m in remission, but I’m still undergoing radiation therapy and hormone therapy.

Fortunately, I didn't experience any strong side effects or financial difficulties.

Since beginning treatment, I haven't made any permanent lifestyle changes. Prior to knowing I had cancer, I frequently texted and called my parents, and that didn't change after the diagnosis. Looking ahead, I plan to visit my family and travel for myself in the next 2 years.

My biggest dreams include learning as much as I can and being a better healthcare provider. I want to be able to support my loved ones.

My biggest fear was feeling helpless. I sought counseling to overcome this fear.

Today, I feel neutral.
