I’m Paul. In February 2021, I found out I had stage 4 prostate cancer. I’m currently on Pluvicto, having gone through chemo before this.

I went to the urologist because I was getting up too many times a night to pee. Plus, I was 58 years old. Other symptoms I experienced included:
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak/interrupted flow of urine
- Trouble emptying the bladder completely
That’s what led to a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer that has spread to my bones.

When I first heard the news, I was fearful, sad and taken by surprise. It turns out that I had cancer for 3 to 5 years and did not know it.

Taking my doctor’s recommendation into account, I opted for chemotherapy and Pluvicto. Actually, I started off with pills and a hormone-blocking shot per month. Then the pills quit working, so I had 2 rounds of chemo over 2 months then switched to Pluvicto. I’m still on Pluvicto today. After deciding on my treatment plan, I thought “It is what it is. This is what insurance pays for.”

The most severe side effect I had as a result of treatment was fatigue. I did not have any energy to possibly do daily stuff. Besides that, I also struggled with hair loss and weight fluctuations. I didn’t do anything to manage my side effects. I’m not going to add more pills to try to make me feel better. I just deal with it. I just wish I’d known before starting treatment about the fact that I’m now chemically castrated and have hot flashes.

I eventually had to quit working because of my health.

Since the diagnosis, challenges in my day-to-day life have affected me the most. The fact that I’m on SSDI and worry about money all the time really sucks. But taking one step at a time is all you can do.

Today, I fear
- Undergoing treatment (e.g., side effects, pain)
- Losing independence or ability to care for myself
- Being a burden to loved ones
- Not being able to continue with normal life or activities
To try and overcome these fears, I am speaking to a therapist/counselor and focusing on physical recovery and staying active.

Today, I feel sad because of the way it’s changed my life.

If you can try natural remedies, give it a shot. If that doesn’t work, go with the old tried and true. Good luck, and may God be with you. Just don’t give up and believe in God.
